SGS-100 Vent-Rib Fiber Optic Shotgun Sight as seen on YouTube

SGS-100 Vent-Rib is a Professional Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight with 3 incredibly special attributes, and more:

# This Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight will solve your cross eye dominance issue!

# This Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight ensures you have a good gun mount, and as a consequence will significantly improve your aim!

# This Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight will never fall of your Vent Rib like some can and do!

How does this Fiber Optic Shotgun Sight as seen on YouTube solve cross eye dominance?

To answer that question, it is necessary to briefly explain what cross eye dominance is.

The term “cross” comes from the fact that you may be left-handed and right eye dominant (or the opposite way round), the “handedness" has crossed over. The problem with this is that most left handed people tend to mount a rifle on their left shoulder and similarly, most right handed people tend to mount a rifle on there right shoulder. If you are right-handed and right eye dominant you don’t have a problem. If you are left-handed and left eye dominant you don’t have a problem. Why? Because the eye nearest to the shoulder the rifle is mounted on is doing the alignment of EYE + BEAD + TARGET. The image below shows this. Everything is naturally in-line.

fibre optic shotgun sight illustration 001

If you are cross eye dominant, the eye nearest to the shoulder the rifle is mounted on is NOT doing the alignment of EYE + BEAD + TARGET. The image below illustrates a right handed shooter with rifle mounted on right shoulder but left eye dominant. The reason this is a problem is that the alignment is being done by the LEFT eye + BEAD + TARGET.

fibre optic shotgun sight illustration 002

The above image is not to scale and the error down range is far more severe than depicted.

Why is the LEFT eye doing the alignment and not the right eye? When you look at an object with both eyes open, you see 2 images. 1 image from each eye. The Brain ignores one of the images! It only register's the image seen by the dominant eye. In the scenario above, the Brain sees the Bead with the left Dominant Eye whilst gun is mounted on the right shoulder. As far as this shooters Brain is concerned, the left dominant EYE + BEAD + TARGET are all in line. The brain assumes that when you pull the trigger, what is in line is what gets shot. Clearly, the gun is looking at a totally different line of sight. To force the scenario of the image at the top of the page, we must make it impossible to see the bead with the "wrong" eye. The image below shows the fibre optic buried deep inside the sight body. You can only see the fibre optic if you look axially into the body.

fibre optic shotgun sight illustration 003

This means the body of the Sight obscures the field of view of the fiber optic from the off-axis Dominant eye, as shown in the image below. The brain is forced to see what we want it to see. The complete reversal is true if the gun was mounted on the other shoulder. The Sight is truly ambidextrous.

fibre optic shotgun sight illustration 004

Many shooters are aware they are cross eye dominant and to try to solve the problem by closing one eye. What that does is to ensure the EYE + BEAD + TARGET was all in line as it should be, BUT they are now without the ability to judge distance and speed having lost the phenomenon of stereoscopic vision. Shooting a moving target requires 2 MUST HAVE attributes: A) The ability to judge distance, B) The ability to judge speed. There is only one way you can achieve both those attributes and that is to shoot with both eyes open. The error at range is considerable if you are not aware you are cross eye dominant. Assuming the Bead is 650 mm from your eye (at the end of the barrel) and your left eye is 64 mm from your right eye, that subtends an angle of error of 5.5 degrees. This equates to an error at range at 30 Metres to 2.9 Metres (114") . So, if you know you are cross eye dominant, and you want to keep your stereoscopic vision, the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight is the answer!

This is what you actually see from each eye under both gun mounted positions

How does this Sight ensure you have a good gun mount (alignment)?

The fibre optic (or Brass Bead) fitted to most shotguns can be seen all the time, from any angle, and don't actually play a part in ensuring your shotgun is aligned correctly. It can't possibly. That is why rifles have a front and rear sight so you can ensure the axis of the gun barrel, front sight and rear sight are all co-axial and "looking at the same thing", the Target! The image below shows the TARGET + EYE + BEAD all perfectly aligned. The bead is acting as a pivot point to rotate the gun. The back end of the gun can literally be anywhere whilst keeping the TARGET + EYE + BEAD in line to no avail.

Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight explanation to how it works illustration 005

So the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight works like a front and rear Sight, but in a single body.  The illustration below shows this principle. The fiber optic is viewed from inside a 5 mm diameter tube. If you view the fiber optic off axis the optic can't can't be seen. If you can see the red or green fiber optic you know that what the disc of light is superimposed on, the axis of the shotgun barrel will be coincident with it. That's because everything is coaxial. The fiber optic is coaxial with the body of the Sight, the Sight is coaxial with the shotgun barrel. You now have a perfect reference point.

With your Shotgun mounted, the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight will show you when you have a perfect gun mount.

You position your gun mount until you see the full circle of light from inside the body of the Sight. You are always aware of your Alignment condition ~ Re-Adjusting is instant ~ You are always in control. Knowing you are "on target" or "misaligned" is immediately obvious to you using the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight. There is an obvious visual difference from perfect alignment to a small rotation (off axis rotation). Perfectly aligned shows a full circle of light. Off axis and the circle changes to an ever diminishing ellipse (please see illustration below).

Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight explanation to how it works illustration 007

It is said that you don't need a rear sight on a shotgun because your eye is the rear sight! Well that works if your eye is in the correct position: (That's what is referred to as a perfect gun mount). BUT, you will only know if your eye was in the perfect position AFTER you shoot! You can NEVER know for sure BEFORE you shoot, and then it's too late! If you have been shooting for a considerable time, only have a front bead, cross eye dominant and never consistently hit targets, this is probably the reason why.

So, why won't the SGS-100 Vent-Rib Fiber Optic Shotgun Sight ever fall off your vent rib?

Unlike some designs, the SGS-100 Fiber Optic Shotgun Sight will not fall off your vent rib. We know this an issue with many Sights available.

In the image below, notice the screws are at an angle such that the Fiber Optic Shotgun Sight is captivated on the vent rib. Many Sight designs try to put the screws against the rib at 90 deg relying on friction which does not work as the screws have to "dig in" to work. As the shotgun's vent rib is very tough compared to the screws, the screws will never "dig in".  The result is, in a short space of time, the sight will fall off. But NOT the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight. No force is needed against the vent rib, just a slight touch and the Sight is locked in place. The angled of the screw takes care of that.

Q. But what if the screw/s come loose?

We now fit every Sight with special Stainless Steel Heli-Coil Screw-Lock Inserts. These inserts have a resilient locking mechanism that grips the screw, preventing it from vibrating loose due to the shock seen during firing. Most shooters leave their Sights permanently attached to the vent rib but if you do disassemble the Sight there is no need to apply Thread Locker anymore!

How does it work? You will see from the image below that the central coil (shown coloured silver) has “straight” segments or “chords”. When the screw enters, these chords flex outwards creating pressure on the screw preventing it from unwinding.

Our recommended way of using this Sight

Mount your gun and hard focus on the Sight Picture, positioning your gun until you see a full circle light, this indicates your gun is aligned.

Now, do not hard focus on your Sight anymore. Hard focus on your Target, or at the distance you know the target will be. This is critical. You only need to be "AWARE" of the Sight Picture in your “SECONDARY” vision.

"BOTH EYES" must be open all the time, when the Sight Picture in your "SECONDARY" vision is on the Target, you know the gun barrel axis is looking at the target also because the Sight and Gun barrel are coaxial.

With both eyes open, you gave yourself:

  1. The maximum situation awareness (horizontal and vertical field of view).
  2. You gave yourself Stereoscopic vision which gives you the ability to judge speed.
  3. It also gives you the ability to judge distance.

Being able to judge Speed and Distance is imperative in order to consistently hit moving targets. It only works when both eyes are open!
